Better Sitters Today, Better Parents Tomorrow. by Amy Kingery, Public Relations & Communication Coordinator, Seven Rivers Regional Medical Centero When Sadie Taylor, 12, first heard about Safe Sitter® from her cousin, Sadie asked her mom to sign her up for the next class. Besides just starting to babysit for families at church, Sadie was also starting to babysit her younger siblings – all four of them! Sadie said she “liked knowing what I was doing.” A year later, Sadie showed her mom that she had learned the lessons well when she saved her younger brother, Cade, who was choking on pennies. Sadie and her siblings were playing in the living room while their mother was close by in the kitchen. Unknown to all of them, Mia, Sadie's two year old sister, had found two pennies, which she gave to Cade, seven months. “I heard him make a weird noise – one I'd never heard before. My mom heard it too and we saw his face was changing color. My mom looked in his mouth and saw a penny, which she removed with her fingers. Then we realized he was still choking. I used the skills I learned in class. He started crying when the second penny came up in his mouth and then my mom took him back from me.” Click here to continue... |
